About the Post/Opportunity/Job

Position: Judge Advocate General (JAG) Entry Scheme 125th Course (Short Service Commission - Non-Technical)

Role Overview: Serves as the legal branch of the Indian Army, handling legal matters, military law, courts-martial, litigation, and providing legal counsel to military commanders.

Commission Type: Short Service Commission granted for an initial 10-year period, extendable by 4 years (total 14 years), with an option to apply for Permanent Commission (PC) in the 10th year of service.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to military commanders on military, civil, and operational legal matters.
  • Handle legal proceedings, discipline cases, military trials, and Courts-Martial.
  • Draft, review, and handle official contracts, agreements, and army service litigation before civilian courts.
  • Ensure compliance with international law, human rights, and law of armed conflict during military operations.

Eligibility

  • Gender & Marital Status: Unmarried Male and Unmarried Female law graduates.
  • Nationality: Citizen of India, Subject of Nepal, or Person of Indian Origin (PIO) meeting Government of India rules.
  • Age Limit: 21 to 27 years as on 01 January 2027 (born between 02 Jan 2000 and 01 Jan 2006, both dates inclusive).

Educational Qualification

    • Minimum 55% aggregate marks in LLB Degree (3-year or 5-year professional course) from a Bar Council of India (BCI) recognized institution.
    • Mandatory CLAT PG 2026 Score (conducted in December 2025).
    • Eligible for registration as an advocate with the Bar Council of India/State Bar Council.

 

Salary/Perks

  • Stipend During Training: ₹56,100/- per month (at OTA Chennai).
  • Pay Level (On Commissioning as Lieutenant): Level 10 (₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500).
  • Military Service Pay (MSP): ₹15,500/- per month.
  • Estimated Annual CTC: ~₹17 – 18 Lakhs per annum.
  • Perks & Allowances: Free medical facilities (military hospitals), canteen (CSD) facilities, government accommodation, Transport Allowance, Dress Allowance, Children Education Allowance, and insurance cover up to ₹1.25 Crore under AGIF.
