Applications are invited for one full-time Research position to work on Criminal Justice Projects at NLSIU.
The engagement is purely contractual for a period of one year, based in Bengaluru, and involves intensive empirical and data-driven research on criminal justice system outcomes in India.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct empirical research on criminal justice issues using public legal and judicial data
- Navigate the eCourts platform to identify, document, and analyse structural features of the Indian judicial system
- Hand-code judicial cases from eCourts to develop robust training datasets
- Analyse judgments and judicial orders to extract and synthesise data
- Assist in development and maintenance of a legal database and open data portal Conduct research on sentencing patterns, bail decisions, undertrial incarceration, and regional or social disparities
- Prepare research reports, documentation, and presentations for dissemination among scholars and policymakers
- Participate in regular project meetings and collaborate with faculty members and research teams
- Undertake field research, where required
- Handle administrative and coordination responsibilities under the project
- Assist project leads in drafting research papers and reports
Eligibility
Qualification
LL.B. degree OR Master’s degree in an allied discipline
Demonstrated training and experience in coding and analysing large government datasets
Desirable
Prior research experience; Experience in empirical legal research
Familiarity with coding or statistical analysis tools
Experience
0–5 years of work experience in an academic or professional setting
Demonstrable evidence of research and writing ability

Monthly Salary: ₹50,000 – ₹80,000
Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience
